The Johnson City community is mourning the tragic loss of Danny D. Davis, a 57-year-old pedestrian who was killed in a fatal hit-and-run crash on Sunday night. The incident has left family members, friends, and local residents grieving as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), Danny D. Davis was struck by a vehicle while walking near the intersection of West Market Street and South Center Street in Johnson City. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials later confirmed his identity following notification of next of kin.
The crash came to light when a Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) deputy discovered a person in the roadway who appeared to have been struck by a vehicle. At the time, emergency communications had not received any calls reporting a collision, and no witnesses were present at the scene. Investigators determined that the vehicle involved had left the area prior to law enforcement’s arrival.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol assumed responsibility for the investigation, with assistance from the Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. As part of the investigation, JCPD officers reviewed available traffic camera footage in the area, which captured the crash and provided critical details about the suspect vehicle.
Based on the footage, law enforcement identified the vehicle as a Subaru Ascent. That information was entered into JCPD’s Flock Safety license plate reader system, a tool used to help locate vehicles of interest. At approximately 9 p.m., officers with THP and JCPD identified a suspect and made an arrest.
THP later identified the driver as 32-year-old Kayla Maria McCown. Authorities stated that McCown has been charged with accidents involving death or personal injury (leaving the scene), failure to render aid and provide information, and failure to immediately notify authorities of an accident. Charges were filed by the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials continue to review evidence and determine the full sequence of events leading up to the crash.
Beyond the investigation, Danny D. Davis is being remembered as a life lost far too soon. His death has left a painful void for those who knew and loved him. Community members have expressed sorrow and concern following the incident, reflecting the deep impact such tragedies have on families and neighborhoods alike.
Fatal hit-and-run crashes are particularly devastating, not only because of the loss of life, but because of the unanswered questions and heartbreak left behind. Authorities continue to urge drivers to remain at the scene of any accident, render aid when possible, and immediately notify emergency services — actions that can make a critical difference in moments of crisis.
As Johnson City mourns the loss of Danny D. Davis, the community joins his loved ones in remembrance, reflection, and support. Further updates will be released as the investigation continues.
